Spironolactone is used to treat high blood pressure. Lowering high blood pressure helps prevent strokes, heart attacks, and kidney problems. It is also used to treat swelling (edema) caused by certain conditions (e.g., congestive heart failure) by removing excess fluid and improving symptoms such as breathing problems.

Spironolactone is not FDA approved for use in animals but is commonly approved by veterinarians to use spironolactone in dogs and cats. Spironolactone is available as 50mg scored tablets. The usual dose in dogs and cats is 0.5-1mg per pound every 12 hours. Give spironolactone with food to lessen stomach upset.

The exact dosage of spironolactone will depend upon the size of your dog and the severity of his condition. The drug is administered in tablet form; most owners will mix the tablets in with food or give them along with a dog treat.
